A transformative journey towards sustainability is underway in the small municipality of Ispaster (Basque Country). Driven by a collective commitment to build a self-sufficient and environmentally friendly community, Ispaster has joined forces with the LocalRES project, embarking on a mission to reduce emissions and carve a path to a greener future.

For years, Ispaster has been at the forefront of climate action, implementing a range of measures to adapt to global warming and mitigate its effects. From the creation of a heat network powered by biomass boilers and solar thermal panels, to the design of charging points for electric vehicles and the creation of collective self-consumption of electricity around the Ekogella energy community, the town has been laying the foundations for a sustainable present.

An important milestone in Ispaster’s sustainability journey is the development of an Energy Community for its residents. This innovative initiative works under the principles of participation and energy democratization, generating spaces for dialogue that allow the development of electricity collectivization projects, making this resource a little more accessible to all neighbors. This approach fosters energy independence and promotes a sense of shared responsibility among community members.

The active participation of Ispaster’s citizens has been fundamental to the success of this project. Regular bi-weekly meetings, which bring together community members with representatives from Tecnalia, Barrizar and Aiguasol – the companies collaborating on the project – serve as a platform for discussion and collaboration. These meetings, which often extend into the evening, allow citizens to provide input on all aspects of the Energy Community, from the design and location of the facilities to operational considerations.

The enthusiasm and dedication of Ispaster residents have been instrumental in getting this project on track. Their input ensures that the Energy Community, known as Ekogella, is a true reflection of the community’s values and aspirations.

The impact of this community-driven initiative goes beyond carbon footprint reduction. By fostering resilience and flexibility in the energy system, Ispaster contributes to a healthier environment and improves the overall quality of life in the municipality.
