The energy community is a new emerging figure in the value chain of the energy sector, with a strong social component of empowerment of citizens and companies over a basic vital resource. The formation of energy communities arises initially from citizen initiatives in different countries of the world, but now it is promoted even by institutions and different regulatory frameworks, such as European directives or national policies of different countries.

It is about a broad and innovative concept, which has already been experimented under different models in various parts of Europe. It is gaining prominence with the challenge of the energy transition and climate emergency, which so badly needs new models of governance from / or with the citizenship.
