The project for a self-sufficient island in the center of Olot (Girona) initially involved using two district heating and cooling networks fed by fully renewable, local energy sources to meet the thermal needs of five service buildings in the market (one new and four existing buildings). The energy sources to be used in the project were solar, geothermal and nearby biomass.
A joint venture between Gas Natural Fenosa and Wattia included a number of differentiating elements in its bid and won the contract to set up and manage the district network and energy production for thirteen years. AIGUASOL drafted the initial and detailed designs and managed construction all throughout the project.
