The current proposal consists essentially of three conceptual lines emanating from the political will of Europe and the Barcelona City Council and likewise attempts to overcome potential regulations by the Spanish government against self-consumption of renewable energy: the search for buildings that consume nearly zero energy, the incorporation of energy from renewable sources in the energy mix and energy self-sufficiency. This latter goal has been established as a priority by the Barcelona City Council.
The facility designed by AIGUASOL for Montjuïc Castle aims to produce on-site renewable energy sufficient to cover a large portion of the energy consumed on the castle grounds. The sources will be biomass and solar photovoltaic energy. These two sources were selected based on an analysis of potential economic performance over the medium to long term.
Currently, the castle’s electricity demands are met by a connection to the conventional electricity grid, and its heating and cooling needs are covered by electricity-power heat pumps.
The installation designed by AIGUASOL aims to generate on-site renewable energy for a large part of the energy consumed in the castle.
