After 48 months of collaborative work, AIGUASOL celebrates the completion of its participation in the REGENERA project— a strategic initiative driving the development of technologies for the efficient storage of renewable energy and the production of green fuels such as hydrogen, methane, and hitane.

This ambitious project, part of the “Science and Innovation Missions” program led by the Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI), and funded through the European Recovery Plan – NextGenerationEU, brought together a strong consortium of 8 leading companies — DAM, ENGIE, Sorigué, Hidroquimia, Tyris AI, H2B2, Exolum, and AIGUASOL — along with several top-tier research centers.

Shaping the future: simulating tomorrow’s energy

At AIGUASOL, we contributed our expertise in the techno-economic analysis of the technologies developed, integrated within a real industrial environment. Our data-driven, rigorous approach enabled a precise assessment of their feasibility and competitiveness on a national scale.

Over the course of the project, we carried out detailed modeling of key technologies using the TRNSYS simulation environment, covering both core systems (SOEC, BES-EMG, and BES-BioH₂) and auxiliary equipment (compressors, photovoltaic systems, reactors, cogeneration engines, etc.). The modeling also incorporated real application environments — such as a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and a brewery — simulating fully integrated industrial scenarios.

The results included energy and mass balances at a 1 MW scale, illustrated with Sankey diagrams and integrated into the project’s Digital Optimization Platform (PDO). This work enabled the generation of multiple simulation scenarios, including full economic analysis (CAPEX, OPEX, market prices, etc.) and evaluation of key profitability indicators (NPV, IRR, payback period), along with a comprehensive sensitivity analysis of critical variables.

Committed to a sustainable future

The work carried out was essential to support the conclusions of Work Package 5 (WP5), demonstrating that the Power-to-Gas (P2G) model can convert surplus electricity — particularly during low-cost solar hours — into renewable energy carriers capable of replacing natural gas.

Likewise, the Power-to-Power strategy, which involves converting renewable gases back into electricity and heat, emerges as an effective response to the increasing volatility of the electricity market, offering storage capacity and greater flexibility for the energy system.

These technologies represent a major step forward in decarbonizing industry and the energy mix. However, large-scale deployment will require strong support mechanisms: subsidies, new financing models, or progressive cost reductions through R&D and innovation.

At AIGUASOL, we are proud to have been part of REGENERA and to have contributed sustainable, intelligent, and scalable solutions to the challenge of a climate-neutral Europe. We remain committed to bringing renewable energy closer to industry and society, with cutting-edge technology and a transformative vision.
