At Aiguasol, we have led the preparation of the detailed design for the comprehensive renovation of the thermal, electrical, and HVAC installations of the swimming pools at the Usabal Sports Complex in Tolosa (Gipuzkoa, Basque Country). This project represents a decisive step towards improving energy efficiency and enhancing the sustainability of municipal sports infrastructure.
The intervention involves a deep modernization of the energy system serving the indoor swimming pool, incorporating high-performance technologies and solutions specifically designed to optimize the operation of a facility with high energy demand.
Technology in the service of sustainability
The new system is based on the integration of four-pipe air-source heat pumps and biomass boilers, all connected to a newly designed thermal circuit tailored to the building’s actual needs. This configuration enables the simultaneous, efficient, and centralized production of heating and cooling, reducing energy consumption and associated emissions.
In addition, the expansion of the thermal and hydraulic distribution system allows for more flexible and optimized energy management, adapting to the different uses and load profiles of the sports complex throughout the year.
A data-driven project
One of the cornerstones of the project has been energy modelling calibrated using monitored data from the building. This approach has made it possible to accurately size the new installations, ensuring that the proposed equipment responds optimally to real demand while avoiding inefficient oversizing.
Within this framework, Aiguasol has developed the execution project for the renovation of the thermal installation, defining both the equipment and the operating and control schemes to guarantee maximum energy and operational performance.
Improved comfort and indoor air quality
The intervention also includes the replacement and resizing of the pool’s air handling units. This action is essential to ensure a healthy indoor environment, with proper humidity control, high indoor air quality, and optimal thermal comfort for both users and facility staff.
Thanks to the new configuration, the system will be better able to adapt to variations in occupancy and external climatic conditions, consistently maintaining appropriate indoor conditions.
Support during construction
Aiguasol has also assumed the role of site supervision, ensuring that the final installation is executed in full accordance with the optimal design defined during the project phase. This oversight is essential to ensure that the expected energy and comfort performance is achieved in real-world operation.
At present, we are also assessing the potential for a photovoltaic installation on the complex’s roof to contribute to its energy self-sufficiency.
With this project, the Usabal Sports Complex takes a significant step forward towards a more sustainable and resilient infrastructure model, aligned with decarbonization and energy efficiency objectives. At Aiguasol, we continue to work to ensure that public facilities not only reduce their environmental impact, but also provide more comfortable and healthier spaces for the people who use them.
