Energy Communities with Aiguasol and Solar Coop: Renewable, Cooperative, and Sustainable Energy

Year2025LocationCataloniaServicesEnergy Communities services

At Aiguasol, we are transforming the way people consume energy. We work with users, facilities, and companies to generate, share, and manage their own renewable energy, promoting self-consumption and the decarbonization of both electrical and thermal energy use.

Our projects can benefit from SolarCoop grants from the Government of Catalonia (ICAEN), aimed at cooperatives and associations that promote the creation or consolidation of energy communities, the use of green energy, and the implementation of energy efficiency measures.

With the support of SolarCoop, we offer comprehensive services that ensure robust and sustainable projects through two complementary lines of action:

  • Electrification of thermal consumption: we assess the potential to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources for heating and domestic hot water (DHW) in community facilities.
  • Technical and economic viability modelling: we define consumption quotas and energy-sharing coefficients for photovoltaic systems, creating a sustainable and equitable economic model for the entire community.

At Aiguasol, we combine technology, economic strategy, and territorial vision to build efficient, participatory, and long-lasting energy communities, where sustainability and energy savings go hand in hand.

Real Cases: Solar Energy and Renewable Heat in Action

Below are real examples of projects in Catalonia in which we have collaborated through SolarCoop:

CE Sol del Nord – Lluïsos de Gràcia (Barcelona)

In this project, we worked as part of Cívic Energy, a second-degree cooperative created in collaboration with Azimut360 (design and installation of photovoltaic technology) and La Mirada Cooperativa (legal and communication advisory services). Together, we support the creation and development of energy communities across Catalonia.

Our joint effort aims to reduce the community’s dependence on gas, by analysing the substitution of conventional boilers with heat pumps. We also assessed the photovoltaic potential of the sports centre’s rooftop, ensuring an optimal installation for the energy community and its members.

Our contribution included:
✅ Sizing the rooftop photovoltaic installation for the sports centre
✅ Assessing the potential for electrifying DHW production systems
✅ Defining the business model, consumption quotas, and energy distribution
✅ Conducting technical and economic feasibility analyses

The result? An energy community that unites facilities and users around a shared vision of cleaner, local, and participatory energy.

Sitges Solar – Sitges (Garraf)

This project was also developed in collaboration with Cívic Energy, advancing towards the real decarbonization of thermal consumption in two key facilities in Sitges: the Hotel Sitges and the “Les Magnòlies” retirement home.

Our contribution included:
✅ Evaluating the performance of the Hotel Sitges photovoltaic system to maximize self-consumption
✅ Assessing the potential for electrifying thermal demand
✅ Proposing the replacement or complementing of gas boilers with heat pumps
✅ Analysing viable economic models for the energy community

The impact? The decarbonization of thermal systems is a cornerstone of a complete energy transition, combining technology, strategic planning, and a sustainable economic model.

CE La Llacuna – La Llacuna (Anoia)

In this project, we collaborated as part of BATEC, Pol Cooperatiu per a la Transició Energètica, together with Azimut360, Societat Orgànica, and La Ciutat Invisible.

The energy community strategy in La Llacuna focuses on renewable thermal energy, making use of local forest resources thanks to its privileged location and promoting a collective biomass boiler purchasing model for residents.

Our contribution included:
✅ Assessing the potential for replacing conventional systems with biomass and other renewable sources
✅ Developing the business model and financial plan for the community
✅ Defining the collective purchasing model to optimize investment
✅ Conducting technical and economic feasibility analyses

The result? An energy community that integrates users through renewable thermal energy, ensuring both economic and environmental sustainability while fostering collaborative management of local resources.

Beyond SolarCoop

At Aiguasol, we have extensive experience in developing and promoting energy communities, contributing both technical expertise and strategic insight to support collective renewable energy projects, such as Ekogella (Ispaster, Basque Country), Ecosesgarrigues (Sant Cugat Sesgarrigues), and Bon Pastor (Barcelona), among others.

We have also participated in drafting key national reference guides and documents, including the IDAE Energy Communities Guide (2019), the Energy Communities Guide for Local Authorities (Leader CAMP, 2020), Community Energy in collaboration with Amigos de la Tierra (2021), and Recommendations for Starting a Local Energy Community for the FEMP Guide (2023). These publications underpin our expertise and guide the sector toward more sustainable, participatory, and efficient models.

Need Support to Create Your Own Energy Community?

We offer:

  • Proven experience in the technical and economic analysis of energy communities
  • Capacity to design sustainable and participatory economic models
  • Hands-on experience with community projects combining solar and renewable thermal energy (aerothermal and geothermal)
  • Strong commitment to decarbonization, self-consumption, and the eco-social transition

Every community can generate, share, and manage its own energy efficiently, sustainably, and cooperatively. With this approach, we work to make renewable energy accessible, viable, and participatory, contributing to Catalonia’s energy transition through robust, replicable projects aligned with public policies and available funding programs.
